Ellen Shapiro, Ph.D.
My Approach and Background
Dr. Shapiro offers traditional talk therapy, sex therapy, mind-body healing, and training
in yoga and mindfulness practices. She works privately with individuals and small groups,
and teaches group yoga classes at Namasté Yoga. She approaches all of her work with
mindful awareness, compassion, and complete respect for each person's unique journey
She finds deep satisfaction in helping people heal from emotional and psychological
problems, including depression, anxiety, trauma, abuse, chronic pain, relationship and
sexual problems. She also delights in working with couples and individuals who are
seeking more fulfillment and joy in their lives through integrating body, mind, and spirit. In
addition to talk therapy, there is much healing to be found in the creative blending of
other modalities, including expressive movement, mindfulness and awareness practices.
Dr. Shapiro completed her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at George Peabody College of
Vanderbilt University in 1984. Since then she has taken many advanced trainings in
psychology, working with couples, trauma reduction, sex therapy, gender diversity, body
and energy healing, yoga, and meditation. She is a FL licensed psychologist and an
AASECT-Certified Sex Therapist. She meets the qualifications of Sex Therapist as defined
in the Florida Statutes, and has continued to obtain up-to-date training in sex therapy.
Dr. Shapiro is an experienced therapist with years of helping people make lasting changes.
Beyond her clinical training and continuing education in psychology, she has trained in
EMDR, Mind-Body Stress Reduction (MBSR), Therapeutic Yoga, Bioenergetics, Acupressure,
the 4-D Wheel (integrating spirituality and sexuality), Heart in Sexuality Integration,
energy healing and spiritual psychology, and other modalities. Mindfulness, present
moment awareness, and honoring all the ways our selves express themselves are key
components of the work. Your individual or couples sessions will be completely
personalized to you and may include any of these approaches.
